Developing quality learning and teaching through play - Carmyle Primary School

About Carmyle Primary School

Carmyle Primary School is a non-denominational school in the East of Glasgow. There are approximately 250 children in the school, with an additional 60 children in the nursery class. The primary building is 10 years old and completely open plan. The nursery class is a 7-year-old, purpose-built unit adjacent to the main school building.

Following HMIe and HMIe/Care Commission integrated inspection, there was a clear opportunity to develop the quality of learning and teaching through play from nursery to P3. Historically, staff within the nursery had not been part of the whole school. Play provided an important vehicle for staff in both the primary and pre-school sector to come together and share expertise.

Project aims

  • To improve the quality of play from nursery to Primary 3
  • To enhance staff knowledge and understanding on current theories and practice in relation to young children’s learning
  • To update the school policy on play, including planning and assessment
  • To enable smooth transitions for children in their move from nursery to Primary 1
