Support for parents

Parents chatting in a staff room

It's not always easy being a parent – and as a parent you play a crucial role in making children are happy, healthy, safe and achieving their potential.

The Support for Parents programme can help you:

  • improve your reading and writing skills
  • solve problems through counselling
  • work with the school through home-school link workers and parental liaison officers
  • get support through parent workshops and parent groups.

To find out more, get in touch with your child's school.

Support for parents with very young children

Sure Start Scotland offers support for families with very young children (0-3 years), particularly those who are most vulnerable.

Support for parents

The Scottish Government is committed to providing early support to parents and it has a range of policies and programmes that provide support for parenting either directly or indirectly. This includes funding for a range of parenting projects which promote positive parenting skills and support to parents, especially at challenging times.

The Scottish Government is planning the development of an early years strategy which will address our longer term goals on early intervention, supporting parents, childcare and integrated services.

The strategy will:

- be long term

- cover pre-birth to 8 years old, including pre-conception issues such as parenting education

- cover the range of services that support young children and their families

Its aim will be to address three related challenges within a single approach:

- Improving outcomes for all children

- Identifying children and families with higher needs and taking preventative action to build capacity and minimise the risk of poor outcomes, and

- Taking effective action where risks to children need to be addressed

Parents Centre

Parents Centre is an English website that offers general support to parents and carers. Although most of the laws don't apply in Scotland, it has good information for parents about issues affecting children such as safe use of the internet, ways of dealing with bullying and advice on behaviour and discipline issues.
